Thirteen

THE following week was very stressful for Alyssa and Jeremy but mostly for Jeremy. They were heavily questioned by police, and became the prime suspects in Aubrey’s disappearance. Somehow, like Alyssa and Jeremy suspected they would, the police tried linking them to Wyatt and all the other children’s disappearances as well. Though they were innocent, it did not help that they were threatened with charges and possible prison sentence.

The police were now everywhere in town, making sure children were safe from predators. Both Alyssa and Jeremy were now being watched tightly. At least, they were until police could prove they had nothing to do with the disappearances. Rumors spread around school about them being co-conspirators, which caused Alyssa and Jeremy to stop going and eventually drop out. They were miserable and their lives only got worse and worse. They never imagined their lives could take such a turn for the worst. The only bright side was that they had police near them at all times and made it difficult for Daemortis to show up for them. Though, they didn’t know how long this would last.

Other children disappeared, which helped their case a little since they were not witnessed leaving their homes. Before long though, authorities issued a town curfew for everyone, causing parents to take time off from work to keep an extra eye on their children. All the disappearances had officially brought the town fear and paranoia, and it was the first time ever that this had happened to a town like Pen Hill. A tragedy like this had never occurred before, but it was enough to make everyone realize how vulnerable they truly were to the world around them.

Alyssa spent most of her time in her room sitting at her desk on her laptop. Every time she went to her window, she would spot a police car parked across the street keeping an eye on her. She kept her blinds closed all the time now, not wanting the surveillance anymore but also not wanting the fear. The sun had not been out in what seemed like forever, it was always dark and gloomy, much like their lives now.

It was nine thirty p.m. when Alyssa got a message on social media. It was Jeremy, and he requested a video chat. She accepted, because despite all the stress, it would be nice to see Jeremy was still alive and okay. She waited a couple of seconds of loading before Jeremy’s face popped up on her screen. He was in his room on his laptop, and he looked exhausted and terrible.

“Oh my God, Jeremy . . . are you okay?” she asked concerned.

“My life is so screwed. The police are after me. They’re trying to get me to confess to killing Aubrey.”

“Me too. They think you and I are lovers, and I convinced you to kill her so we could be together,” explained Alyssa with no humorous tone whatsoever.

An awkward silence befell them. They both felt ashamed at the same time for the first time since they started having an affair.
